The Art and Science of Matboards
At Capricorn Framing, we see matboards as more than just a backdrop—they're a critical component in the design and preservation of any custom frame involving paper-based artwork or documents. Whether you're framing a delicate watercolor, a vintage map, or a treasured certificate, a thoughtfully chosen matboard enhances both the visual impact and long-term care of the piece.
Why Use a Matboard?
When glazing (using glass or acrylic) is part of the framing design, a matboard serves an essential protective function. By creating space between the artwork and the glazing, the matboard helps prevent condensation buildup, mold growth, and image transfer—common issues when art is pressed directly against glass. This small space can make a significant difference in preserving the integrity of your piece.
We Use Conservation-Grade Materials Only
Not all matboards are created equal. At Capricorn Framing, we use only conservation-grade (alpha-cellulose) and archival (100% cotton rag) mats. These acid-free materials ensure they won’t yellow or cause "burning" over time, unlike cheaper paper mats. Cotton rag mats, in particular, are naturally acid- and lignin free and have been trusted by museums for generations.
Matboards: Elevating the Custom Framing Design
Matboards have evolved into an important design element within the framing package. They can be used in a single layer or stacked in multiples, each with carefully cut reveals to add depth and sophistication. Available in different thicknesses—2-ply, 4-ply, and 8-ply—matboards allow for a range of effects, from subtle separation to bold dimensionality.

Wrapped in Elegance
For clients looking for something truly special, we can offer hand-wrapped fabric mats using silk, linen, cotton, and other textiles. These tactile finishes elevate the presentation, lending a luxurious, bespoke feel that flat paper mats can’t match. Fabric-wrapped mats are especially popular for heirlooms, limited edition prints, or original works of art.

Decorative Touches
While neutral tones remain a classic choice, we also work with a broad palette of matboard colors to complement and enhance the artwork. Whether it’s a warm tone to bring out a detail in the art or a cooler hue to create contrast, color is a powerful tool in the framer’s toolkit.

Additional flourishes like painted or gilded bevels and the inclusion of fillets (small, decorative inner frames that sit inside the mat window) can further enrich the design. We'll explore more about fillets in a future post—they deserve their own spotlight.
Function Meets Form
Beyond aesthetics, matboards also offer practical benefits. They can cleverly conceal flaws or damage on paper items, allowing us to present a cleaner, more polished final product. It’s a subtle yet effective way to ensure your piece looks its best without compromising its integrity.
